The term “Bandhavgarh” is derived from “Bandhav” and Garh”. The Sanskrit words “Bandhav” means brother and “garh” means fort. As the name suggests, Bandhavgarh is named after Lord Rama’s brother Lakshmana. It has special presence in ancient India as it was gifted by Lord Rama to his brother after winning the epic Lanka battle. Perched above the canopy of the jungle, the magnificent Bandhavgarh Fort echoes the grandeur with crumbling walls.
The royal legacy of wildlife starts before Bandhavgarh becomes a wildlife sanctuary. It was once a private hunting ground for the Maharajas of Rewa. Ironically, the princely relation between the Maharajas and Britishers also preserved the wilderness along with capturing pictures ahead of fallen tigers as trophies. As Bandhavgarh was preserved only for royal hunting, huge area of the forest was untouched for having the refuge for flora and fauna.
It was not until the late 1960s when uncontrolled hunting and encroachment had reduced tiger population of India alarmingly. The Government of India took initiative and conservation efforts.

The bond between Charger and Sita was so epic that even National Geographic couldn’t resist to cover in their documentaries. She walked the trails as if she knew she was born to be photogenic. She also raised several cubs in a challenging land and taught her instincts and adaptability as a role mode. She used to pause before crossing the tracks and scan the lands for any threat before she calls her cubs.
B2 – The Prince known for his Gentleness
Male tigers usually inspire awe in tiger safari India. But the son of Charger and Sita, B2 was more than just dominance. He was well-built, bulky, and muscular beast but also gentle at the same time. He never scared or shown aggression to safari drivers and tourists, as if he used to presence of humans. Even his single glimpse made safari of tourists successful. He was rightfully named as “tourist-friendly tiger” by naturalists who reigned for almost a decade.
With these stories, it is evident that tigers are not just wild animals in Bandhavgarh. They humanize the wild and connect humans to nature. They attract tourists as reminders of what is at stake for the sake of development. When it comes to tiger conservation efforts, it is more than protecting species. It is about securing the stories of survival and courage.
Speaking of conservation, there are several challenges ahead for Bandhavgarh –
Conflict between humans and wildlife
With crop destruction, livestock wandering, and sudden attacks on human, buffer zones are still vulnerable to conflict between tigers and villagers, though several villages were relocated out of core area with efforts by the NGOs and Forest Department. More sustained efforts are needed along with awareness programs, compensation, and rapid response force.
Heavy tourist flow
Bandhavgarh is among the most visited tiger reserves in India. Along with awareness and revenue, tourism also brings pressure to wildlife due to mismanagement. Luckily, regulated timings, closing during monsoons, and zoning of core and buffer areas have relieved the stress a bit.
Overall, Bandhavgarh is more than a national park. It is the kingdom where mythology, memory, and nature connect. Its rich history of conservation is a testament of its shift from a hunting ground to a wildlife sanctuary. As you pass through the wilderness of Tala and other core zones, you will feel the spirit of wilderness as you spot various endangered species of flora and fauna.
